Folk songs and proverbs are the lifeblood of the undivided Goalpara district's folk culture. The simple wisdom of the village people is reflected in their proverbs. The folk literature of Deshi Muslims provides a complete picture of the mind-set of the Deshi Muslims living in the undivided Goalpara district of Western Assam. This folk literature has enriched the life of rural society by adding various shades of colour to it. The emotions of both the educated and uneducated villagers are expressed in oral literature. Relying on hearsay and memory, these oral traditions have been passed down and practiced through generations. The dominance of folk songs within the folk society of the native Muslims is evident. It is through folk songs that the collective identity of the natives is properly recognized. These folk songs serve as a vision of a cohesive society and the creation of a collective consciousness.
There is no definite information about the lyricists or authors of these folk songs. Over time, the experiences of the folk society expand, and the emotions of individuals are beautifully expressed in these songs. However, it is also true that a song composed by an individual reflects the inner feelings of that person, rather than the collective experiences of society as a whole. The folk literature of these people provides a complete picture of the mind-set of the Deshi community living in the undivided Goalpara district of Western Assam.
