LONGEVITY A PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
Keywords:
Longevity, Sadvritta, Psychological FactorsAbstract
Introduction: Ayurveda would be the ‘knowledge of longevity’. This is so because the ancient sages of India were extremely careful to distinguish between life, a spiritual phenomenon, and longevity, a term which refers to the proper maintenance of the body. Ways and paths of healthy long life have been concluded in 2 verses of Charaka Samhita. There are around 15 factors for the longevity described, in which Ahara-Vihara occupies a little part while others are the psychological factors. Therefore it can be assumed that Manasa Bhavas are of same or even more importance for the longevity. Aim & objectives: To explain and explore the importance of psychological factors for healthy long life. Material and methods: The classical texts along with available commentaries, other literature related to the subject, research papers, and material available on websites have been referred as material to construct the conceptual base of the subject. Observation & Discussion: By observation it is found that along with the regimens regarding Ahara and Vihara more emphasis has been given on the psychological part for the longevity. Many researchers found that selfless service, truthfulness, honesty etc. improves the health and beneficial for the longevity. Conclusion: Thus along with daily regime, seasonal regime, exercise; good conducts (personal, social, environmental) one can gain Dirghatu (longevity) along with Sukhayu and Hitayu.
