Keywords:
Metacognitive Reading strategy, Reading Comprehension, EFLAbstract
The purpose of this study was to assess whether freshman students had high level awareness on how to regulate and monitor reading comprehension. University students must actively process information and critically evaluate spoken, written, and electronic sources during their stay in the university. Data in this study were collected from 94 English and Literature department of freshman students from three Ethiopian Universities. Metacoginitive Awareness reading strategies inventory was used to collect data from students. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics to determine the mean of strategies employed by the learners. According to the findings English language learners were almost near to the base line of medium (M=2.43) metacognitive reading strategy users. Accordingly, recommendation has been made to raise students’ awareness on metacognitive reading strategies and adjustment on English reading activities.
